Mission
CAI will
- provide a platform to efficiently participate in multi-national research facilities
- stimulate collaborations among research groups at Angstrom

Presently, in many fields of science cutting-edge research is carried out at large multi-national reserach infrastructures.
Well-known examples are CERN for high-energy physics, ESRF for synchrotron radiation science, the observatories in Spain and Chile for astronomy.
This trend towards large centers continues with the XFEL facility that will play a crucial role in the future of physical and life sciences, the FAIR facility for nuclear physics, the ESS for neutron based research, and the ESO/ESA planet finding and characterization missions.
Users are expected to contribute in-kind to the construction and operation of the facilities and their instrumentation. Playing a significant role in this process requires a powerful infrastructure in the home country with highly skilled personnel to create a strong platform from which to launch Uppsala University's participation in international collaborations. The Center for Accelerator and Instrumentation development (CAI) provides such a platform.
